Severe Weather Conditions
Should the Island experience severe weather, decisions made about schools being open or closed is made centrally by the Education Department. This document is a summary and reminder to all parents of the procedures of school closure due to severe weather:
Decision Not to Open Schools
If schools have to close, a decision will be made at around 6am.
However, if conditions are not certain, a decision will be made at either 7am or 8am.
There are a few ways you can keep up to date with school closures and school travel:
- check the Government of Jersey page regularly for updates
- check updates on the LibertyBus website
- listen to BBC Radio Jersey and Channel 103
- watch ITV News Channel TV
- check social media for news and updates, including the Jersey Evening Post and Bailiwick Express
Closure When a School is in Session
If weather conditions are forecast to deteriorate during the day, whilst the school is in session, a decision to remain open or close will be made by the Education Department.
All students are expected to follow arrangements agreed at the start of the school year, as directed by parents/carers;
- remain at school until collected
- make their own way home, when appropriate
- walk to a pre-arranged location such as your workplace
It is therefore necessary for your young person to know exactly what your instructions are should a forced school closure be called during the school day. All students that are expected to remain in school will be supervised until they are picked up, or wait for a scheduled bus.
If for any reason, parents/carers have changed their severe weather arrangements for their young person, please communicate these changes to the school administrators adminks2&3@lasente.sch.je so that central records can be adjusted.
